Red Ruby rudely read Roald.

This week we are starting our new literacy topic, Poetry. To kick it off we have been looking at tongue twisters.

See if you can say some of these:

I saw a Russian wrestling rhino, a Russian wrestling rhino I saw, and when I saw  the Russian wrestling rhino it was red, I asked ‘is the red ruby rabbit there?’ and the Russian wrestling rhino said ‘It’s there!’. By Kyle and Harry.

Rosie Ruby roars really rudely. By Advertisers

Amazing aardvarks adding apples to the ark. By Jemima C and Faith.

PINK – just for girls?

Last week’s thought of the week ‘Should Boys Wear Pink?’ sparked some strong opinions in Ruby class, such as – ‘no one owns the colours, so why shouldn’t they?’. So today we reopened the debate, and discussed whether girls’ toys should be pink and boys’ blue. We looked at Argos’ website and saw how differently toys were sold – this got us talking! So, after a lot of talking, we wrote (very polite!) complaint letters to Argos. Here are some persuasive examples…

What would you say?

As part of our literacy unit Authors and Poets we looked at this picture by Vincent Van Gogh. We thought about how the man in the painting was feeling, then we role played what we would say to him to cheer him. Some people gave him advice, and some people gave told him funny stories. We wrote a letter to him to try and lift his spirits. What would you say? Here are some of Ruby class’ brilliant examples.

Dear Emmanuel,

I haven’t seen you for ages, it has been a long time. So are still upset about your friend leaving to America because it’s been 1 year. Guess what happened a week ago! I came out the lift and my top got stuck in the door, so I got embarrassed! I had to press the button to release me. I hope that cheers you up. If your friend left then I can be your other best friend. Hey! Why don’t we pop out on Saturday somewhere? That’s a good idea. I am hoping you feel better someday. We could go and play football, also are the best. I will by you a present so get ready.

From Terrence.

Dear Richard,

I haven’t seen you for ages! How are you doing? Are you ok after what happened weeks ago?

Here’s a way to cheer you up. Have you tried painting your friend? I tried that once, and it worked.

Here’s one of my funny jokes!

What did the boy do? He was writing and pood on his work!

Why did the cat cross the road? To watch the bat cat eat flap jack!

Why did the cow cross the road? To see hiss mooo la la girl!

Bye bye for now!

Kind regards,

Almeria.

What is the function of roots?

Today we did an experiment to see what the function of roots is. We wanted to see how they took up water. So, used food dye to colour water and put some celery in there. Now we are waiting to see what happens! Here are some photos of us in action:

What makes plants grow well?

As part  of our new science topic ‘how plants grow well’, Ruby class have come up with lots of different experiments to test what helps plants grow well. To test if plants really do need sunlight to grow they came up with a test. We planted pea seeds, lots of them! They are all getting water and warmth, but only half of them are kept in the light. We are hoping to see which one will grow better. Here are photos of the saplings one week in. Can you tell which has had no sunlight? Which do you think will grow better?

Brazil!

Welcome back everyone! As you already know, our new IPC topic is the Olympics and Ruby class are going to be learning all about Brazil and their part in the olympics. What do you already know about Brazil?

Shape investigation week

Last week was shape investigation week. On Thursday we hunted for right angles in the classroom – we found loads of them! Where can you spot a right angle?

Selhurst Evangelical Church

On Wednesday we took a trip to Selhurst Evangelical Church. Pastor Rob was very welcoming. He talked to us about why people go to Church, what it means to different people, and about the upcoming celebration of Easter.

Thank you to Rob for showing us round, all the brilliant adults who came along to help, and to Ruby class for their superb behaviour.

Happy World Maths Day!

Yesterday was World Maths day, and what a joyous day it was!

We spent the whole day taking part in different maths activities, playing maths games, and we even got to share the great Maths games that we created at home with our lovely friends in Year 1.

Here are some photos of us having fun with maths:

Freeeeze frame

As part of our new unit on adventure stories we’ve been looking at how adventure stories are structured. We read The Tunnel by Anthony Browne and created freeze frames to show what we thought happened to Jack whilst he was in the tunnel. Here are some pictures, look at our different facial expressions and see if you can tell which character we’re playing.
